Local people. Real support. Close to home.

Peer-Led Support
Local Connection

Our Champions live with disability too. So when you talk to them, you are talking to someone who gets it. They listen first. Then they help you take the next step.

Champions are part of your community. They work across Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Childers, Rockhampton, Gympie, and Gladstone. They help you find local services and groups, and connect you with the right people.

The Community Champions program helps people with disability in our region find support, services, and connection. It is led by local people who live with disability themselves. They know what it is like, and they know the area.

Part of a Bigger Change
Trained and Backed

Disability support across Australia is changing. Our program is part of that change, delivered right here in our region. Local action, shaped by the people who live here.

Champions are not on their own. Wide Bay Advocacy trains them and supports them every step of the way. That means the help you get is steady and reliable.

See how we train our Champions

Our Champions learn real skills to help people in their community. We build the training with local Champions, not just for them. People who live with disability help shape what is taught. That keeps it simple, easy to follow, and useful in real life.

Module 3. Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Good support starts with good listening. Champions learn how to talk with people in a clear and kind way. They learn to work out what someone needs, and to make every person feel heard.

Module 2. Professional Practice & Boundaries

Champions learn how to help in a safe, respectful way. They learn what to do, what not to do, and how to keep healthy limits. This keeps everyone safe and the support trustworthy.

Module 1. Peer Support Principles

This is the heart of it. Champions learn how to support people as an equal, not as an expert talking down to them. They learn to listen, build trust, and walk beside someone who has been through it too.

Module 5. NDIS & Other Support Systems

There are many services out there, and they can be confusing. Champions learn how these systems work, so they can help people understand their options and find the right door.

Module 9. Crisis Recognition & Response

Sometimes a person needs more help than a peer can give. Champions learn how to spot those moments, and how to connect someone with the right professional support quickly and safely.
